Tax Programs

Taxes are often a major limiting factor to landowners in the west shore area.  However, we have the solutions you are looking for.  If you are a landowner with 20-640  acres, you'll want to be sure to check out the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development's Qualified Forest Program.  The Qualified Forest Program is designed for those landowners looking to receive up to 16 mills (minus a 2 mill fee) off of their property, and to cap the current assessed value.  There are no public access requirements, and no building restrictions- a very popular choice for landowners in the area!

If you have 40+ acres and are looking to manage exclusively for timber, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Commercial Forest Program may be for you.  In exchange for developing a forest management plan and allowing public access for hunting a fishing, the State of Michigan affords landowners a tax of $1.25/acre (minimum $250).  It's a great option for landowners who may not always be able to utilize their property for recreation!

Cost Share
